I could... I could tell you something, say some things to your question, but then you would have only part of an answer
Because... there are things of the context that only come with experience. Things that aren't so easy to just impart with words, you know? Great writers spend years trying to find the words, and we don't have years right now.

It isn't about giving up to a higher being's will
It's about... We are called to a purpose, to represent our world, and fight on its behalf. To push ourselves to the brink, for all our sakes. I think we will be judged, if judgement is the word at all, on how hard we strive. Most of all, on how much we grow in the effort.

BACKGROUND

Joanna was originally from Amarosia, born and raised during the last of the wars in the area. Her family only partially escaped it, managing to moving around away from the front through some of her childhood, and were bracing themselves for the next war to begin...

When the wizard came, instead, making threats and displaying truly awesome powers - in the sense that the world was awestruck. And war kept not coming back, as the world held its breath, year after year, in anticipation of an apocalypse. Warhawks kept not getting the traction they needed to keep stealing resources and lives from each other, when there was a force threatening them all that the militaries of the world couldn't fight.

She grew up with relief about how war kept not coming back, and her family - like a lot who were personally impacted by the fighting - came to similar conclusions: the wizard had saved them. How the wizard changed the danger to the world so everyone was equally at risk, and chose people from all corners to fight side by side to save friends and hated ancient enemies alike. And many people, quietly, found all kinds of meaning, and purpose, and faith in that understanding.

Some church groups expanded on these ideas, encouraged their followers to doubt outsiders and anyone who wants a return to the horrors of warfare. To only really trust people who weren't denying these truths. To take fear of the world maybe ending one of these times, and instead of thinking about fighting the wizard off, how to accept the death hanging over their heads and do good things for people in the meantime - and, especially, to do good things for each other, even when it's personally inconvenient or painful, because being good people meant helping.

In that spirit, as an adult still 'choosing' to be part of the grassroots movement for guiding people to better understanding of themselves and the world, Joanna and a couple other young adults adopted a much younger war orphan to raise together. It went. They tried their best with good intentions, fueled by the desperation of basing their self worth on their success, but never really learned to talk about their needs. Love cracked with the tensions, and the group split into a couple and two solo adults.

A decade or so ago, in the aftermath of the family breaking up, Joanna went out to a small farming community of fellow hooved folk to open a book shop. Her adopted child came with, somewhat begrudgingly, and lived with her only a couple of years before moving back in with their other parents.

By now, it's a shop filled with everything from history to fantasy to practical life guides, escapism and romance and art. Whatever people in the small community want. And, for the sake of her grassroots movement, a few times a week she opens space in the upstairs of the shop for little groups to gather. Meetings of people looking for help through life's troubles, guidance through the fears of wizard season, even poetry reading and book clubs. Various interests catered to, for the sake of a recruiter to find people who might really appreciate what the grassroots cult is offering.

Waking one day to find a talking goat, telling her that she's chosen to be one of the twelve heroes to work against the Wizard's proclamations, to defend the world's continued existence through striving against the monsters... It's nothing she expected, any more.

PERSONALITY

Joanna's a sharp-tongued bookworm at heart, but softened with age and experience to focus on providing for others. She prioritizes making a comforting place to visit, offering a shoulder to cry on and an ear for others' thoughts and worries. When they express interest in what she has to say, she paraphrases from various texts and stories. She's quick to say that she's already okay, and doesn't need for anything, and to deflect things back to whoever she's speaking with.

But beyond her providing exterior, she's too accustomed to putting herself aside for the sake of others. She's buoyed by faith and the community of the grassroots church, and - they quietly but firmly don't let her forget - being supported by them. The farming village and surrounding communities aren't big enough, or keen enough on reading, to keep the shop afloat. She's careful to repurpose things, to do her own maintainance where she can, but largely she can't keep up with rent. The shop's continued existence - this manifestation of her dream, to live in a peaceful little town among people who look something like her, surrounded by books and cats and visited by people who appreciate these things - is thanks to the support of the church. And it's a poisonous mix of gratitude and dependence at the back of her mind, keeping her from asking for more.

ABILITIES

- Innate power: a slight telekinesis. Not a lot of mass, not a lot of momentum, but enough for moving books up on shelves w/o a ladder (being hooved, she's not fond of ladders. staircases are fine, but ladders wibble)

- Knight power: The ability to pause objects (not creatures) in place for a period of time, during which time any forces inflicted on it accumulates until it's released. She first discovers this as an expansion of her mild telekinesis, and it'll take some experimenting and brainstorming to realize it can freeze even something as large as a train, permit some ridiculous speedrun movement, and - with some real coordinated effort - make projectiles break the sound barrier.

aka: Stasis, inspired from the LoZ:BotW power.

OOC permissions
  • backtagging Very yes, I'm a somewhat slow and flakey player, and I'm usually happy to continue a thread for a couple months. CAVEAT: I prefer to resolve game threads after 2-3 months, since by then the game's moved on.

  • threadhopping Free-for-all silly meme, go for it. Something plottier with no reason for your character to jump in, communicate first to get a go-ahead.

  • fourthwalling Let me know in advance because this is an OC, how's your character going to fourthwall someone who barely has a written history? Help me help you, with our ridiculous shit.

  • shipping I'm not very interested in cute shipping unless it comes up organically, but there's fun to be had in mind control and coercion.

  • off-limits IDK YET
IC permissions
  • physical contact Sure, shake her hand, pat her shoulder (if they can reach, she's a bit tall)

  • mental contact Go for it, but, let me know so I can write more of her thoughts into the narration

  • fighting/injury Joanna doesn't want to fight, she's kind of a bookish lady, but... she gets superpowers to fight monsters in her home game/canon. We could make a thread work; communicate with me!

  • death Not interested, I'm not sure what to write at that point, a tag of [is dead]? Does the thread end there?

Appearance:
Concept art
Joanna's a middle-aged bookish faun lady, with light curly hair graying at the roots. Her ears and legs have hair a bit darker than her skin, with a scattering of pale spots similar to her human hair. If she has horns, they're only nubs hidden in her curls. She tends to wear pencil skirts with any variety of tops, and some jewelery - turquoise necklace, and sometimes earings.

Abilities or Equipment:
- Innate power: a slight telekinesis. Not a lot of mass, not a lot of momentum, but enough for moving books up on shelves w/o a ladder (being hooved, she's not fond of ladders. staircases are fine, but ladders wibble)

- Her own regular clothes, plus a black leather jacket (?) with metal studs all over it (???) donated from a kind-hearted punk fan who wanted her to be warm, and have something a little more durable for fighting in.

- A regretable bundle of thank you cards from cultists who want her to hand deliver them to the wizard

Character Meme Answers: (Choose 5-15)

2. What is their quest? Is it something they believe in?
She sees her self as a provider, with a bit of food and shelter, but mostly with understanding and stories. She runs a bookshop full of stories about the world so people can understand themselves and each other better, and has a room above the shop where various groups meet up to talk about things.

3/4. What object makes them feel strong when they hold it?
Her turquoise necklace, an oval pendant with a stone where the irregularities roughly resemble the continents. It feels like she's holding the world in her hands.

12. When tired, what do they picture as a comfortable place to rest?
A sunny windowsill with a cushioned base, leaning against the wall so the sun's not in her eyes but is warming her body.

16. What is an apology your character needs to make that they have been putting off?
Joanna first needs to understand that she'd encouraged her child to live with her out of fear of loneliness, and all her ideals that a small town would be good for the growing teen were rationalizations. Then, maybe, she'll have an apology that's true from her heart.

22. Under what circumstances might your character steal a cake?
Spite. If it belongs to someone she personally dislikes, and she thinks it won't cause any real harm, and it looks tasty...?

27. What story did your character hear growing up that is foundational to their personality?
She heard a lot about how the wizard's appearance ended war as they knew it, the idea that warhawks no longer stood to gain from going to war, so now most of the world lived in peace - aside from, you know, the annual near-apocalypse and all the fear that inspires.

29. How would your character prefer to die?
In sleep, fading from a good dream - one about the better parts of her life.
